World’s largest cruise ship sets sail

HELSINKI – The world’s largest cruise liner began its maiden voyage on Friday, gliding out from a shipyard in Finland and heading to Florida, with an amphitheater, basketball courts and an ice rink on board.
The 16-deck Oasis of the Seas spans 1,200 feet (360 meters) from bow to stern. Its 2,700 cabins can accommodate 6,300 passengers and 2,100 crew.
Commissioned by Royal Caribbean International, the ship cost $1.5 billion and took two and a half years to build at the STX Finland Oy shipyard in Turku, southwestern Finland.
The liner has four swimming pools, volleyball and basketball courts, and a youth zone with theme parks and nurseries for children. There is also an ice rink that seats 780 spectators and a small-scale golf course.
It features various “neighborhoods” — parks, squares and arenas with special themes. One of them will be a tropical environment, including palm trees and vines among the total 12,000 plants on board. They will be planted after the ship arrives in Fort Lauderdale.
In the stern, a 750-seat outdoor theater — modeled on an ancient Greek amphitheater — doubles as a swimming pool by day and an ocean front theater by night. The pool has a diving tower with spring boards and two 33-feet (10-meter) high dive platforms. An indoor theater seats 1,300 guests.

Facebook spammer hit with $711M fine
Saturday, October 31st, 2009A U.S. court has ordered a Las Vegas man to pay Facebook $711 million US in damages for spreading spam messages on the social networking site.
Sanford Wallace accessed Facebook members’ accounts without their permission, and sent out fake messages and wall postings, the company said on its website on Friday.
“We won another battle in the fight against spam,” the company said in a statement.
Wallace was successfully sued last year, also for spreading spam, by MySpace, which won a $230-million judgment. He was also fined $4 million in 2006 by the U.S. Federal Trade Commission for spreading pop-up ads online.
Facebook said it doesn’t expect to get any money out of Wallace, who is bankrupt, but added that he could face jail time.
“Most notably, the judge referred Wallace to the U.S. Attorney’s Office with a request that Wallace be prosecuted for criminal contempt, which means that in addition to the judgment, he now faces possible jail time,” the company said in its statement. “We will continue to pursue damages against other spammers.”

Wallace used “phishing” techniques to gain unauthorized access to users’ accounts, and then send fake wall posts and messages. He filed for bankruptcy this summer.
This is not the first time Wallace has been found liable for malicious marketing practices on social networks. In May of 2008, MySpace won a $234 million judgment against Wallace and business partner Walter Rines for illegal spam and phishing attacks against MySpace users. Wallace has been actively building his “Spam King” reputation since 1997, having been charged with various federal crimes over the last decade.

Facebook finally makes money, tops 300m users
SAN FRANCISCO, Sept 16 — Facebook is making enough money to cover its costs and now has 300 million users, the world’s largest social networking site said yesterday, proving the Internet’s newest star industry can be a viable business.
Facebook is now generating enough cash to cover its operating expenses, as well as the capital spending needed to maintain its fast-growing service.
Analysts said this shows the financial viability of Facebook, which has faced questions about its underlying business model, despite its popularity, and was a good sign for a potential initial public offering. (more…)
